Premier of ‘Song of Fireflies’ celebrates Loboc Children’s choir
SAN BRUNO – The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco attended the Bay Area premiere of Song of the Fireflies last August 2 at Century Theatres in Tanforan, San Bruno. The screening was organized by the Philippine International Aid (PIA) in celebration of its 39th anniversary and served as an appreciation event for the organization’s donors and partners. The Consulate was represented by Consul Rowena Pangilinan-Daquipil.
Song of the Fireflies tells the inspiring true story of the world-renowned Loboc Children’s Choir from Bohol, and how the choir’s humble beginnings, guided by the dedication of teacher Alma Taldo (portrayed by singer-actress Morissette), blossomed into international acclaim. The film beautifully captures the power of music, perseverance, and community in uplifting Filipino youth and preserving cultural heritage.
In his opening remarks, PIA President James Tecson Lim emphasized the organization’s long-standing mission of providing educational assistance to underprivileged Filipino children, as well as a newer scholarship initiative aimed at supporting immigrants and children of immigrants enrolled in US community colleges. He underscored education as a bridge to empowerment and belonging. Lim also highlighted PIA’s critical relief efforts for Filipino Americans affected by the Los Angeles wildfires.
Following the screening, one of the film’s producers, Girlie Rodis, shared insights on the film’s production journey — which began before the pandemic and was completed in early 2025. She noted the participation of actual Loboc Choir members in the film and shared that the official soundtrack, released under Morissette’s label Underground Music, is now available on major streaming platforms.
Earlier this year, the Loboc Children’s Choir, led by Taldo and Concert Tour Consultant Lutgardo Labad, performed at events organized by the Philippine Consulate General in San Bruno and Alameda during their US tour.
