Coming Soon to San Francisco! A Monument to Honor the Philippines’ National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal
San Francisco’s Filipino community is planning to honor Dr. Jose Rizal with a new statue, following the upcoming dedication of a monument in Colorado Springs on July 27. Spearheaded by community leaders like Polly Cortez, this initiative welcomes sculptor-lawyer Elaine Bordeaux for a community meeting this week. The monument will celebrate Rizal’s legacy of freedom and education.
This project joins existing recognitions in San Francisco, including a plaque at The Palace Hotel, Rizal Street, the former Dimasalang House (now San Lorenzo Ruiz Center), the Philippine Consulate General Exhibit — and Dr. Jose Rizal busts at Seafood City outlets in California. Let’s unite to bring this tribute to our national hero to our city!

Manilatown Arts presents Club Mandalay — where the music is live and the community is gathering! Get ready to smile, dance and enjoy an unforgettable experience at the International Hotel Manilatown Center, 868 Kearny Street, San Francisco. This FREE, family-friendly, in-person event will bring together jazz music lovers and community enthusiasts from all around the Bay Area.
At 2:00 pm, our house band the Manilatown Jazz Ensemble (AKA The Autonomous Region), will take the stage featuring Caroline Cabading on Vocals, Raymond Bambao on Bass, Harold Ohashi on Drums, Chris Planas on guitar, Socorro DeCastro on piano and special Guest Soloist Melecio Magdaluyo! And then at 3 pm please join Jibril Alvarez and Jibril's Cool Jazz Combo when they take the stage for a great funky jazz set.

The Hinabi Project's 1st weaving workshop series:
- Traditional Philippine Weaving with a back strap loom with Kalinga Master Weave, Jenny Bawer-Young, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, Saturdays and Sundays, on the following dates in 2025: May 24, May 25, May 31, June 1, June 7, and June 8.
- Traditional Philippine Weaving with a Jack/Table Loom with Balay Kreative/Kreative Growth Artist, Dana Sabaria, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, Saturdays and Sundays, on the following dates in 2025: August 30, August 31, September 27, September 28, October 25, October 26.
DESCRIPTION: Each session within the 3-part series for each instructor builds upon the previous session towards a finished woven product you can take home. You are welcome to attend any number of sessions, but we recommend you attend all sessions of one instructor/particular loom to experience the complete series from beginning to end.
