One of the most significant milestones for our community is the creation of the Filipino Town Cultural District in Las Vegas. The Clark County Commission unanimously passed the resolution on April 15, 2025, and now it’s time to celebrate!

Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 9, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Boulevard Mall for the official street sign unveiling. Join us for this celebration, which will feature food, entertainment, and cultural performances.

This new cultural district spans a 1.2-mile corridor along South Maryland Parkway, from Desert Inn Road to Flamingo Road. The area was a natural choice, as it’s already a central hub for Filipino-owned businesses, including the popular Seafood City supermarket.

The visionary 90-year-old community leader, Rozita Villanueva Lee, spearheaded the effort for this designation and will serve as the honorary chair for the celebration.

AFTER NATIONAL NURSES WEEK: HONORING A RETIRED NURSE AND EVENT ORGANIZER, CYNTHIA “CINDY” BERNALDEZ GAABUCAYAN

A retired Filipina nurse was laid to rest at Westside Heritage Garden, Cypress Lawn in Colma, California, on May 21, 2025. Best known for being gentle, compassionate, and caring, Cindy Gaabucayan is remembered for the way she made people feel—loved.

I share Cindy’s story today because event organizers like her rarely take center stage. They are the unsung heroes behind the success of many community events. Sometimes I wonder: Should I have written this while she was still alive? Perhaps. But it’s never too late to honor her now.

Although Cindy and I had been classmates since we were nine years old, we didn’t reconnect until our high school reunion — 25 years after graduation. By then, Cindy was ready to explore new avenues of service beyond her annual Santo Niño de Cebu fiestas.

I introduced her to several community-based organizations in the Bay Area. She quickly found her niche among the dynamic women of the Bay Area Woman’s Club, a nonprofit affiliated with the Greater Federation of Women’s Clubs and its state counterpart, the California Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Outside her demanding nursing career at San Francisco General Hospital, Cindy found great joy in

organizing events and tours for classmates, friends, family, and fellow nurses. One of her proudest accomplishments was running RCC Travel Express with her husband, Roy. Their tagline, “Entertainment by Bus,” captured the spirit of the group tours they coordinated. Cindy once reminded me—much to my surprise—that I had helped her come up with that catchy phrase.

I remember when Cindy and I co-emceed a program for the first time. She was nervous, yet she allowed me to coach her. After that, she blossomed—confident on stage, engaging guests with clever icebreakers, and creating thoughtful party favors that added special touches to each event. Cindy even shared that she had taken hip-hop dance classes to stay fit. Ever the lifelong learner, she also taught herself handyman skills and tackled home construction projects with enthusiasm.

In recent years, we didn’t see each other often. Email became our favorite way to stay in touch. I couldn’t attend many of the reunions she organized, but our friendship never wavered. Cindy supported me through my health challenges, and I shared event planning checklists while serving as her behind-the-scenes editor.

By the time Cindy retired at age 60, she had earned numerous awards. In 2013, she received the prestigious “Daisy Award,” nominated by patients and families for going above and beyond in direct patient care. She was recognized as an extraordinary nurse who exemplified compassion, empathy, and outstanding clinical skills.

Cindy Gaabucayan lived a life of service—whether as a nurse, an event organizer, or a friend. In remembering her, we honor not only her legacy but also the quiet power of those who work behind the scenes to bring people together and support one another.

Coming Soon to San Francisco! A Monument to Honor the Philippines’ National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal

San Francisco’s Filipino community is planning to honor Dr. Jose Rizal with a new statue, following the upcoming dedication of a monument in Colorado Springs on July 27. Spearheaded by community leaders like Polly Cortez, this initiative welcomes sculptor-lawyer Elaine Bordeaux for a community meeting this week. The monument will celebrate Rizal’s legacy of freedom and education.

This project joins existing recognitions in San Francisco, including a plaque at The Palace Hotel, Rizal Street, the former Dimasalang House (now San Lorenzo Ruiz Center), the Philippine Consulate General Exhibit -- and Dr. Jose Rizal busts at Seafood City outlets in California. Let’s unite to bring this tribute to our national hero to our city!

The San Francisco Filipino Cultural Center, doing business as Sentro Filipino, is offering an opportunity through its Sentro Filipino Exhibition Grant for 2025. “Sentro Filipino invites all artists and performers to submit an application to participate in our Sentro Filipino Exhibition Grant program.

“Participating artists will be provided with the opportunity to exhibit, perform, or showcase their work in Sentro Filipino. These include opportunities for placement of artwork in our Mission Street Gallery (our lobby exhibit, which captures thousands of viewers daily); larger exhibits, workshops or performances in our main reception or assembly halls; or other fundraising and social events at our facility.

“Once selected, we will work with the artist/performer on marketing and promotions, logistics, and an opening-day event! Applicants will be contacted on a rolling basis throughout 2025.”

On November 13 and 14, 2024, the Philippine Trade & Investment Center - Silicon Valley (PTIC) and Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco successfully launched and presented "Tatak Pinoy: Likhang Laguna Goes to USA." Trade Commissioner Kitchie Umali and her team toured visitors during the unveiling and launch of the “Tatak Pinoy: Likhang Laguna Showcase” at the PTIC SV Lounge on the second floor of the Philippine Center on November 14, 2024.

Tatak Pinoy's goal is simple: Elevate Filipino products and services in the global marketplace. This initiative of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry's (PDTI) Competitiveness and Innovation Group focuses on micro, small, and medium enterprises across the Philippines (MSME), whose high-quality offerings create jobs, drive and sustain economic growth. Pride in Filipino-made products and services is highlighted in the curated exhibits at the Lounge.

The Laguna entourage was headed by the Provincial Government of Laguna, the regional and provincial directors of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry, and 15 exhibitors of heritage/artisanal/homegrown products and food delicacies from Laguna.

In 2023, the province of Laguna launched its "Likhang Laguna" seal of excellence. The exhibitors who visited San Francisco are among the gold and silver recipients of this government-issued seal, verifying that a product is made in the Laguna province of the Philippines and meets high-quality standards.

Trade Commissioner Kitchie Umali reiterated PDTI's mandate of promoting the Philippines as a destination for investments and a source of world-class products and services. She briefly touched on the key strategies to promote MSMEs, which include leveraging digitalization and artificial intelligence, encouraging product diversification, making available financing options, promoting franchising and mentoring, and presenting Philippine products in Philippine embassies and consulates. Celebrating Filipinx Literature and Art: A Recap of the 7th Filipino American International Book Festival

The San Francisco Public Library recently hosted the dynamic 7th Filipino American International Book Festival, a free event that drew in a diverse crowd of book lovers, families, and curious attendees. Held on October 12-13, 2024, the festival showcased the rich tapestry of Filipinx literature and art, offering something for everyone.

Families with young children were delighted by the extensive selection of children's books, including "komiks," graphic novels, picture books, and coloring books, all brimming with Filipinx stories and cultural elements. Even culturally appropriate tarot cards, "The Decolonized Tarot," were available, reflecting the festival's commitment to inclusivity and representation.

This biennial event has seen remarkable growth since its inception in 2011, with an ever-expanding selection of books. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitated a postponement, the festival returned stronger than ever, demonstrating the resilience and dedication of its organizers.

Engaging Discussions and Literary Insights

The festival featured insightful panel discussions and "Inkstorm" sessions, where authors and poets shared their freshly published works. Notable discussions included Ninotchka Rosca's observation about the vast potential market for Filipino writers and artists, highlighting the growing recognition and demand for their unique voices.

Chef Claude Tayag, a renowned culinary artist, graced the Opening Reception with his presence, launching the second edition of his book, "The Ultimate Filipino Adobo: Stories + Recipes from the Heart." He captivated the audience with a reading of a poem by Rio Alma, beautifully capturing the essence of "Adobo" in Filipino culture:

"A Hymn to Adobo: Oh! My Mother's adobo, Good for all seasons; Like a heart that loves, Gets better when it lasts."

This heartfelt tribute resonated with many attendees, evoking memories and emotions connected to this beloved Filipino dish.

Another insightful panel, "Poetics of Place & Transformation," featured poet Tony Robles, who shared his mother's wisdom: "Poetry exists wherever the poet happens to be." This simple yet profound statement emphasized the universality of poetry and its ability to transcend geographical boundaries.

Empowering Filipino Communities Through Literature

The panel on "Leading the Way: Filipinx in Publishing, Bookselling & Literary Organizations" offered valuable insights into the role of Overseas Filipinos in promoting Filipinx literature and culture. It emphasized the potential for partnerships with local libraries to organize book readings, "tertulias" (literary gatherings), and other events that showcase Filipino heritage.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of bookstores as "community connectors," encouraging collaborations between booksellers like San Francisco's Lily Prijoles of Arkipelago Books and emerging Filipino authors, poets, and artists. These partnerships can create a supportive ecosystem for Filipino creatives, fostering their growth and amplifying their voices.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Filipinx Literature

FilBookFest7 served as a testament to the thriving landscape of Filipinx literature and art. Driven by dedicated volunteers and spearheaded by the Philippine American Writers and Artists (PAWA), a non-profit organization, the festival continues to provide a platform for Filipinx creatives to connect, share their stories, and inspire others.

As the Filipinx literary community anticipates the Philippines' special recognition as the "Guest of Honour" at the 2025 Frankfurt Buchmesse, the festival's impact extends beyond its immediate reach. It serves as a reminder of the power of literature and art to bridge cultures, foster understanding, and celebrate the rich diversity of Filipino experiences.

SFFACC hosts successful international chambers meet-up

The San Francisco Filipino American Chamber of Commerce (SFFACC) and Bei Hotel hosted a successful International Chambers Meet-Up on September 24th, 2024. Held in the Bei Hotel lobby from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, the event provided a valuable opportunity for chamber representatives to network, share insights, and explore potential collaborations. Each organization had a dedicated 2-3 minutes to present current projects, initiatives, and key opportunities that aligned with the attending chambers' goals.
