Toronto, CN — The 50th annual Toronto International Film Festival officially kicks off on Thursday, September 4, and will run through September 14, electrifying the city with eleven days brimming with cinematic solidarity, red carpet moments, and some of the most exciting global premieres. For half a century, TIFF has accrued beloved adoration not only for uplifting groundbreaking international and Canadian films, but also incubating transformative career and life experiences that unite filmmakers, audiences, and industry voices through intimate conversations and heartwarming celebrations. This milestone half-century iteration is slated to be its most dynamically diverse and showstopping yet, spotlighting an extraordinary range of talent and stories from across the world, especially those typically under or misrepresented in cinema.
For the AAPI community, TIFF has consistently supported and advocated for the inclusion of authentic and fair representation of both filmmakers and film topics, especially during recent moments of anti-Asian prejudice. This solidarity and commitment to community is unequivocally evident in this year’s program, offering a plethora of Asian and Asian diasporic storytellers that further platform accurate narratives.
From thought-provoking debuts to seasoned directors, we’ve curated 18 AAPI films to help you navigate the grand lineup that are sure to edify, entertain, and inspire long after this 50th year cinematic extravaganza.
