SAN JOSE – The San Jose State Spartans opened the seasoned with a couple of interceptions, missed field goals against visiting Central Michigan.
The back-and-forth game highlighted Central Michigan’s running attack. San Jose also lost the turnover battles, 3-0 with all three coming in the first half.
By the early third quarter, San Jose erased a 13-0 deficit. Yet, San Jose failed to convert field goals from 33 and 56 yards in the final two minutes of action that could have allowed them to escape with the win.
Finally, the San Jose Spartans offense got back in gear. Spartans quarterback Eget connection was the spark, this time for 36 yards. Eget found another new receiver for the first down of the year, completing an 11-yards TD to Leland Smiths.
Facing a 16-14 deficit with 4:00 remaining, San Jose quickly got into the field goal range with pass of 39-yards from Eget to Smith. But Spartan’s kicker Dennis Lynch took the field goal for his first field goal attempt as his kicked missed wide to the right.
San Jose State opens the season 0-1 and will face the no.1 Texas Longhorns and will host Idaho at home on September 20.
