SANTA CLARA – Last Monday was the week after Aaron Rodgers’ torn Achilles in the last season opener against Buffalo Bills but the 49ers still emerged victorious.
While the home team was without star running back Christian McCaffrey because of a Calf injury. Mason made sure his absence wasn’t felt too much with 147 rushing yards and one touchdown.
But much of the focus was on Rodgers, who had ups and downs on the way to 13-of-21 passing for 167 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He didn’t even finish the game as Tyrod Taylor came in for the final drive and threw a touchdown.
Expectations are high once again for the Jets with future Hall of Fame Aaron Rodgers under center and plenty of talent around him.
Jordan Mason helped wear down Jets defense and kept Rodgers on the sidelines. It was more of the same when the 49ers used more than seven minutes on a touchdown drive to open the second half.
With the running game rolling, the 49ers didn’t need much from Brock Purdy. But he still delivered when needed and his performance would have been better had it not been for some costly drops, including at the end of the first half when wideout Brandon Aiyuk dropped a would-be touchdown.
Purdy finished 19-of-29 for 23 yards with no touchdown and no interception.
