PBRC holds annual Thanksgiving Giveaway to the Community The Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center (PBRC)’s gift giving event dubbed Drive Thru Thanksgiving Giveaway to the community was held recently at their new office at Northgate Avenue in Daly City. The heartfelt tradition supporting and uplifting the local community occurs when the PBRC come together each year to provide essential resources, food and festive cheer to those in need, ensuring that no one goes without during this season of gratitude. “We are committed to fostering a sense of unity, compassion, and service, as we celebrate the spirit of giving and strengthen the bonds within our community. This event is a symbol of our shared values of bayanihan — working together for the common good,” reiterates Perla Ibarrientos, PBRC co-founder and Board Chair Emerita who is still very much active in Filipino community very worthwhile projects. In this year’s thanksgiving event, Ibarrientos urges everyone to join, “in making this year’s giveaway a success and spreading kindness to those who need it most. Your support and participation make all the difference in bringing joy and hope to families in our community.” Among those given away in the event was a $50 grocery card, a meal and other giveaway items for the family per car while supplies last. Main sponsors for this year’s gift giving aside from PBRC were Moonstar Charitable Organization through Daisy Lee who gave at least 350 small trays of cooked food and Arevon Cormorant Energy Storage whose project is one of several energy storage projects throughout California that is being developed to help the state achieve clean air and energy mandates. Cormorant gave a generous amount of $10,000 for the Thanksgiving event this year and was also a partner in last year’s gift giving. "Arevon’s team was proud to participate in the PBRC event that brought meals and gift cards for groceries to more than 600 residents and their families at Thanksgiving.” “We look forward to continuing our participation in the community as we develop our Cormorant Energy Storage project in Daly City. In addition to significant tax benefits to the area, the project will increase grid reliability, reduce the potential for brownouts and blackouts, and reduce peak prices of electricity during high demand periods. The projects has a minimum 20-year operating life, and we plan to be a contributing member of the community for the long term, said Kevin Smith,” said the AREVON Chief Operating Officer The PBRC tradition started in 2020 when they were at Junipero Serra at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic when they received a sizeable grant for Mother’s and Father’s Day gift-giving and reached at least 3,000 families with the help of Daly City Councilmembers and other city officials. “I am so glad we can give out at least 450 gift bags for this year’s Thanksgiving Giveaway to the community!” said Ibarrientos. The former I-Hotel made headlines as a subject of a nine-year struggle to stop the eviction of hundreds of residents—mostly elderly Filipino bachelor men or manongs— who had lived in the single-room-occupancy (SRO) residential hotel for decades, and as the final bastion of San Francisco’s once-thriving “Manilatown.” The broad coalition that was formed to save the I-Hotel became a linchpin for Asian American solidarity in San Francisco, and a foundation for the housing and tenant’s rights movement in the United States. New Bayanihan Equity Center at SOMA Pilipinas District (San Francisco PCG photos) Upon the invitation of the Bayanihan Equity Center (BEC), Consul General Neil Ferrer joined Mayor London Breed and other local officials in a press event on October 22, announcing the BEC’s acquisition of a building at 616 Minna Street, SOMA Pilipinas District through a grant from the City and County of San Francisco. In his speech, Consul General Ferrer thanked the BEC, led by Executive Director Luisa Antonio, for “keeping the flame of our veterans’ heroism alive and well into the modern times” by “providing welfare to Filipino veterans and their families, and for educating younger generations of Filipino Americans about our history.” He also extended his appreciation to Mayor Breed and the City Government for their support to the BEC and other Filipino American organizations in San Francisco. Set to be operational in January 2025, the new center is expected to provide services and case management in areas of senior care, affordable housing, immigration, transportation, and food assistance. Originally established in 1999 as the Veterans Equity Center, the BEC has worked to advance the welfare of Filipino World War II veterans and their families through direct services and advocacy. The organization changed its name in 2017 to reflect the expanded services provided for low-income immigrant San Francisco seniors, people with disability, and families.
