San Francisco, CA- Mark your calendars! CAAMFest 2024, the annual celebration of Asian American cinema, arts, and culture, is set to kick off with a compelling lineup of films and events this May’s API Heritage Month.
Running from Thursday, May 9th to Sunday, May 19th, the opening night all begins with the premiere screening of “Admissions Granted” at the grand and historic Palace of Fine Arts Theatre. Directed by the incredibly talented Hao Wu and Miao Wang, this gripping documentary follows the journey leading up to a landmark Supreme Court case challenging affirmative action at Harvard University. Through compelling interviews, insightful archival footage, and creative animated sequences, this can’t-miss film will delve into the intersectional complexities of the affirmative action debate, revealing the divisions within the AAPI community and our nation’s increasing polarization on issues of race and inclusion. Expected guests include directors Hao Wu and Miao Wang.
Following the screening, attendees can revel in the subsequent Opening Night Gala, held rightfully at the elegant Asian Art Museum. Delectable bites from top Asian American restaurants and riveting music from talented local DJs will commemorate the night as a proper celebration of AAPI media representation and the SF Bay Area as a landmark for compelling cinema. Guests will also have the opportunity to explore the museum’s latest exhibit, Phoenix Kingdoms, featuring extraordinary artworks from a forgotten bronze age society.
Throughout the two-week festival, audiences can immerse themselves in a diverse array of evocative films, including the must-watch centerpiece documentaries “Q” and “And So It Begins.” Directed by Jude Chehab and Shuchi Talati respectively, these films offer intimate and thought-provoking explorations of love, devotion, and the complexities of family dynamics- themes which resonate both universally and intergenerationally for AAPI and wider audiences.
“Q” delves into the influence of a secretive matriarchal religious order in Lebanon on three generations of women, while “And So It Begins” provides an unflinching look at the political landscape of the Philippines amidst the reign of President Rodrigo Duterte. Both films offer poignant insights into the human experience and the enduring search for meaning.
