Are you familiar with lipote fruit or Syzgium curranii? It is similar to
Java plum or duhat but a bit firm and hard to the touch. It tastes sour with a little bit of sweetness and tartness to it.
Although not really endangered, the lipote tree grows in select areas because it is considered rare. This tree grows in abundance in Isabela, Quezon, and Palawan. It is also said that this one-of-a-kind tree only grows in the Philippines.
The lipote tree bears fruit in abundance. A bunch of lipote fruits will first appear white and starts to turn yellow then gradually becomes pink until it changes to purple. You know it is ripe and ready to eat when the fruit turns black.
According to several studies, the fruit of the lipote tree is rich in antioxidants and Vitamin C. It also helps to lower down high blood pressure and cholesterol levels especially for those people with diabetes. The lipote fruit is said to be effective at the onset of colds and flu. It is also said to be antiseptic, meaning, it may prevent or inhibit the growth and action of microorganisms.
It is eaten as is, much like the java plum but tastes more delicious sprinkled with sugar and salt then shaken to coat the fruit. You may also make a jam or wine out of lipote fruit then store for later consumption.
