Whew! It’s so hot in here! In the Philippines, we often joke that there are only two seasons: hot and hotter. That’s because summertime begins at the last week of February and you don’t know when it’s going to end.
But the hot season brings in mouthwatering bounties — fresh fruits! And two of the most sought after are kaimito or star apple and mangga or mango. They are so sweet that once you start eating them, it’s hard to stop.
And why not? Star apple for one, is not just creamy-sweet, it’s also rich in Vitamin C, B complex, and fiber that help our immune system fight some bacteria and diseases. Aside from that, star apple is said to be safe to eat by people diagnosed with diabetes and those suffering from diarrhea.
Mango, on the other hand, is the kind of fruit people never get tired of eating. Even foreigners rave about how deliciously sweet our mango is compared to other countries’ mango. The Philippines’ national fruit, mango is available all year round and can be found everywhere.
Raw or ripe, mango is loaded with Vitamins C and E, which help promote good skin, support healthy scalp and hair growth. It also helps improve memory and relieve stress. Mango may also help lower cholesterol levels at some point. But go easy on the mango, specially if your sugar level is a bit high. Because mango contains more sugar than any other fruits. Moderation is key – limit your consumption to only one slice a day.
Star apple and mango? Aaargh, who can refuse them? Not me.
