Silyang Pinoy or Pinoy chair. Is there such a thing? Yes, there is. And we will soon find them in primary and secondary public schools in the Philippines, according to the Department of Science and Technology or DOST. The DOST is optimistic to replace the wood and plastic school chairs and tables being used in the classroom today.
Silyang Pinoy is a chair and table combo which is environmentally friendly as it is mainly made from engineered bamboo called e-bamboo, and other raw materials. It is a multifunctional
furniture that can be used for other purpose too, such as during disasters and calamities.
Says DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr: “This furniture technology will support our educational school system and at the same time, be a sturdier furniture for evacuees who seek shelter in schools during disasters.”
What’s more, not only will Silyang Pinoy support our educational school system, it will also provide economic opportunities for bamboo farmers and e-bamboo producers in the country, aside from helping address our wood supply shortage.
In the next school year, don’t be surprised to be welcomed in the classroom with the new Silyang Pinoy. Ok, class, take your seat!
