Since the start of mass deportation, there are many events that unfortunately happened to immigrants. Among them are the cancellation of Temporary Protected Status of about 900,000 immigrants. Another is the cancellation of student visas for many students in colleges across the United States. And lately there is the problem of access by the government to the personal information on income tax returns of individuals. Still another is the cancellation of Social Security Number of some undocumented individuals. All of these events require constant monitoring because you do not know if you will be affected by this action. Some U.S. citizens were also deported in error. Some green card holders were banned from traveling outside the United States.
Many undocumented migrants are afraid to file income taxes because the Department of Government Efficiency was able to obtain access to the IRS database which contains the immigration status, home address and work address of filers. This information is protected by the Privacy Act but unfortunately, the Trump Administration was able to get access. Now the real problem is if the government will use this information to crack down on undocumented immigrants, they can use it for mass deportation.
There is also another action by the Trump Administration that is making immigrants worried is the cancellation of Social Security Numbers of some immigrants who are undocumented.
What should undocumented immigrants do?
The most important action is to find a way to legalize your stay. Otherwise, it will always hunt you and give you sleepless nights. You need to consult with an immigration attorney to help you. This is also the time to ask for help from your families and friends. They can file a petition for you or help you in some other way.
