That’s most Pinoys mantra when eating rice because a day is not complete without this staple food. But is rice healthy to eat three or more times a day, as we Pinoys — and other people across the world — do? Let’s break it down…
There are five types of rice: Brown, black, red, wild, and white. Of the five, the first four are the healthiest. Brown rice contains rich amounts of nutrients that may help prevent certain diseases. Black is said to have the highest antioxidant activity that helps protect cells from damage. Red, on the other hand, is packed with flavonoids that help decrease inflammation in your body and may reduce risk of heart disease and diabetes. Rich in B vitamins, manganese, and magnesium, Wild rice has been shown to reduce certain risk factors for high triglyceride and cholesterol levels in some animal studies, according to healthline.
White rice, the type which Pinoys consume the most, has less fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals found in the first four. But, paired with other foods loaded with the said compounds, you can enjoy eating white rice at the fullest. It is also lower in arsenic than other varieties, an important factor to consider if you are eating white rice on a daily basis.
Well, whichever type or variety of rice you consume, always remember that moderation is key to a healthier you.
Rice, please.
