From “How to Get Away with Murder” to “Fire Island,” Filipino-American actor Conrad Ricamora’s exponential ascent in Hollywood is an enduring testament to his natural talent, perseverance, and the pivotal power of representation. From his early career to his current starring role as “Mary’s Husband” in Broadway’s “Oh, Mary!,” which ingeniously depicts Mary Todd Lincoln in a dark comedy by Cole Escola prior to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, Ricamora has thoroughly captivated audiences with his versatile performances and unwavering commitment to intersectional queer and AAPI authenticity.
Prior to “Oh, Mary!,” Ricamora has had prolific portrayals across a diverse range of mediums, including theatre where he has uplifted AAPI culture into the spotlight. He has captivated in productions “The King and I” as Lun Tha, and most recently, in Broadway’s groundbreaking first Filipino musical, “Here Lies Love,” as none other than president Ninoy Aquino.
As a gay Filipino American actor, Ricamora has shattered stereotypes and paved the way for greater inclusivity and visibility in the entertainment industry. We had the amazing opportunity to speak with Ricamora on how his identities influences, impacts, and motivates aspiring actors and fans on-screen.
Hello, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today! Firstly, big congratulations on your role in “Oh Mary!” Can you share what drew you to this production and what excites you most about its impact or narrative?
“I am most excited about working with Cole Escola. I have been a fan of Cole’s videos and cabaret shows for years. Also when I read the script for “Oh, Mary!” at my kitchen table I was laughing out loud!”
Being a trailblazer for Filipino/AAPI representation in Broadway (especially coming from the groundbreaking Here Lies Love), how has your cultural background influenced your journey in the entertainment industry? Can you share any challenges you’ve faced?
“I think being Filipino American has actually helped me tremendously because Filipinos are so strong and resilient. We’ve had to constantly reinvent ourselves and adapt to new circumstances over and over again and that is also what an actor has to do.”
And so how does the intersectionality of both your Filipino American and gay identities influence the roles that you take on? What do you hope audiences take away from your representation?
“I hope that people feel free to be who they are and to let go of anything that is holding them back.”
What hopes do you have for the future of accurate & respectful AAPI and/or LGBTQ+ portrayals in entertainment? What kinds of stories and characters would you like to see more of or that you hope to take on next?
I want to be a superhero! I’m not kidding! I think it would be so fun to play a character with superpowers and why not have him be Filipino!
5. Your visibility as a gay Filipino American actor is significant for many individuals who may identify or aspire similarly. What advice do you have for them in confidently owning their authenticity?
I would just say work hard and treat everyone with kindness and respect. We still haven’t achieved equality in media representation but we are getting there and will get there!
Last but not least, we’d love to know: what is your favorite Filipino food?!
“Lumpia!”
Thanks so much for your inspiring and insightful responses, Conrad. We are excited to see where you go next!
