Did you know that famous composers Johan Sebastian Bach and Ludwig Van Beethoven were obsessed and addicted to coffee? Well, why not? Coffee is the favorite hot drink of people all over the world with an estimated 2.25 billion cups drank every day. But, is coffee good for you? Let’s get to the facts.

MEMORY BOOSTER. The neuromediators and other boosts one gets from drinking coffee strengthen productivity that enhances memory, even for a short time. This stores short-term information before they are stored to long-term memory. Studies also reveal that drinking 2 to 3 cups of black coffee daily may help prevent the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by up to 65%, according to Healthline.

LESS HEADACHES. The caffeine in coffee is a natural cure against headaches and migraine. And if you take painkillers to ease the pain, better to drink black coffee at the same time because the combination is more effective by 40%.

BOOSTS IMMUNE SYSTEM. Coffee is rich in antioxidants and phenolic compounds that help strengthen the immune system. It may also help fight against cancer, liver, and digestive issues. Recent studies also found that coffee may help Parkinson’s disease, an illness that affects movement, according to MayoClinic.

MAY LOWER RISK OF STROKE. Drinking 1 to 2 cups of black coffee daily may help prevent heart failure when the heart finds it hard to pump enough blood, according to hopkinsmedicine.org. Recent studies also reveal that people who regularly drink coffee have a 20% lower risk of stroke compared to non-coffee drinkers.

MAY LOWER RISK OF DIABETES. Studies show that people who drink black coffee 2 to 3 times daily have a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes by 23% to 50% compared to non-coffee drinkers. This is backed up by a Harvard study that people who drink more than 1 cup of black coffee daily have a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by more than 11%.

LOSING WEIGHT. Coffee increases hormone levels that help weight loss. According to Harvard.edu, drinking 4 cups of black coffee daily may help lower body fat by 4%. This maybe the result of active metabolism from drinking coffee. Coupled with exercise, you sure will melt that fat away.

LESS STRESS/DEPRESSION. Because of the calming effect in your nerves from drinking coffee, one may feel less stressed and depressed. This is because coffee serves as a “stimulator” in the central nervous system one won’t get from drinking soda, tea, or chocolate.

Take note, coffee lovers! To enjoy all the health benefits of coffee, make sure to filter ‘roasted’ ground coffee when you brew it. In a study done by the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, 1 cup of unfiltered coffee has 30 times more diterpenes (pronounced diterpins), chemical compounds that increase cholesterol, compared to filtered coffee.

Best time to drink coffee: Between mid- to late morning, or between 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., when the cortisol level in your body is low. Limit drinking coffee to 4 cups max daily. But if drinking coffee causes you to palpitate, feel nauseous, acidic, develop headaches, and other uncomfortable feeling, consult a doctor.

Let’s drink coffee to that!
