The recent facebook and Instagram glitch sent majority of their users in panic mode. Is my account hacked? Did someone get a hold of all passwords? What happened to all my contacts? How about my personal photos? Oh, no! Is it the end of the world?
These are just some of the questions running in our heads the moment Meta-owned social media platforms, facebook and Instagram, have gone haywire. But why do we worry so much that it almost affects our entire life? Because social media or socmed has become an indispensable part of our life that we almost depend on it not only for entertainment but also for our personal, emotional, and even financial need.
In just nearly two hours, we felt the world spinning, and we realized that just like in any technology, glitches happen. And we come into realizations that nothing in this world is perfect.
What did we realize from that widespread outage? We learn that it’s important to jot down the contact numbers of family, friends, and people we have to communicate to. We realize that meeting face to face with loved ones is more enriching than updating them through facebook or Instagram. We learn that SMS and text messaging still exist. We learn that there are other apps we can use to make video calls. We learn that our smartphone has the capacity to make phone calls other than surfing. We learn to wait, sit still, and savor the peace and quiet we haven’t experienced for so long. We realize that only us have the power to control and run our life — not socmed.
