A Whole Foods store in San Mateo, California will be the first location in the state and the sixth in the country to roll out Amazon Dash Cart technology, reports ABC 7.
“We’ve designed this cart from top to bottom with the customer in mind,” said an Amazon spokesperson in a video interview with the ABC 7.
The AI-enabled smart carts are an optional offering at the location. Customers can log into their Amazon or Whole Foods accounts using a QR code scanner on the device. The cart allows users to scan grocery items directly from the cart, and then check out at the end of the grocery trip without having to go to a kiosk.
The carts also have a built-in screen that shows a real-time receipt of the items and updates a customer’s live location, according to the report.
“You’ll see it tells you where I am in the store. I’m in the specialty foods section. It is in aisle five, so I can look at the aisles, or I can look at this map,” the spokesperson said, pointing to the on-screen map.
In a statement made in January, Whole Foods said that the company is committed to investing in its “Growing with Purpose” mission. “Over the next decade, Whole Foods Market will grow by increasing and investing profits strategically while focusing on four clear priorities: Creating the best customer experience in stores and online, investing in Team Member growth and happiness, delivering exceptional business performance, and expanding reach to serve customers in new ways,” said Whole Foods in a statement.
