You’ve made it — all the work you’ve put into your academic career has finally paid off, and you’re ready to get your diploma and take on what life has in store.
And as someone who dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic during your time in college, you know that life can be complicated — and that nothing is more valuable than your health.
Graduation can mean coming off a school-sponsored health plan or turning 26, the limit for when you can remain on your parents’ health plan. Covered California can be the place to get health insurance for those transitioning into the next phase of their lives.
“Graduating from college is an amazing accomplishment, and congratulations are due to each of you,” said Covered California Executive Director Jessica Altman. “But with all the changes in your life, it’s important to think about how you’ll be protecting your health. If you’re leaving your health plan behind when you graduate, you may be eligible to enroll during Covered California’s ongoing special-enrollment period. Taking care of your health gives you the freedom to pursue your post-college dreams.”
There are currently more than 448,000 Californians between the ages of 18 and 34 who are receiving quality health insurance from name-brand companies by being enrolled in a plan through Covered California.
In addition to losing health coverage from being removed from your parent’s health plan or a school-sponsored plan, the following circumstances are among the more common reasons people become eligible for special enrollment:
- Losing health coverage because you have lost or changed jobs.
- Getting married or entering a domestic partnership.
- Having a baby or adopting a child.
- Moving and gaining access to new health plans through Covered California that were not available where you previously lived.
- Becoming a citizen, a US national or a lawfully present individual.
If you qualify under any of these conditions, you are eligible to get health insurance and join your fellow Californians in having one fewer thing to worry about. Make sure you take advantage of the financial help available to you and your family.
