SANTA CLARA — Brock Purdy started but it was backup quarterback Josh Dobbs who supplied some fancy leg work in a 49er 16-10 win against the New Orleans Saints last August 18 at Levi’s Stadium.
Purdy was on for the first quarter when the offense managed a first down and total of 12 yards. Purdy only completed two of six passes. He had time to throw but could not find open receivers and the Saints pass rusher put pressure on Purdy.
After Purdy played his three possessions, veteran Josh Dobbs entered the game. Dobbs is competing against Brandon Allen for the backup role.
But the quarterback was destined to struggle from the beginning as Purdy didn’t play with any of his top pass catchers. Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, Jaun Jennings and Mccaffrey, Kittle and Juszczyk were all out, leading Purdy to play the backup skill position players and there was the difference.
After all, it was pre-season and Purdy was playing with group of backups.
