About one in five retail samples of milk tested contain bird flu virus fragments, FDA reported Thursday, with a greater proportion coming from milk in areas with infected dairy cow herds.
FDA and USDA have indicated that based on the information currently available, the commercial milk supply is safe due to the pasteurization process and the diversion or destruction of milk from sick cows.
“To date, the retail milk studies have shown no results that would change our assessment that the commercial milk supply is safe,” said FDA in a statement.(SFA)
